Bible Reflections From Scripture Union Volume One

DAY 52 OF 181

God in the Rites Read Leviticus 6:8–7:38 Every high priest is selected from among men and is appointed to represent them in matters related to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. Hebrews 5:1 Few regard homemaking as glamorous. The duties are repetitive and mundane. As a homemaker, I need to see God’s hand in the things I do, lest I lose sight of His calling. The book of Leviticus is a handbook of regulations given to the priests. The text today involves repetition of offerings mentioned in the earlier chapters, but this time it is from the priests' point of view. Through the offerings God wants them to see His holiness and His special care. The linen garments the priest wore while on duty (v 10) are a symbol of God’s righteousness. By God’s grace the priest is clothed with His righteousness, to enable him to minister to God and serve His people. The fire on the altar which has to be kept burning day and night represents the presence of God in all the offerings. The fire originated from God’s presence (Leviticus 9:24). It signifies the ceaseless love God has for the people. As the priest tends the fire, he is made aware of the special privilege he receives from God. Except for the burnt offering and sometimes the sin offering, the remains of the other offerings are given to the priest. This was how God provided for the priest and his family. The food is holy and must be eaten at the proper place. For the people’s benefit God prohibits them from eating tainted meats, fat and blood. Let us be very conscious that God sees whatever we do today. Let Psalm 91:1 be our prayer: He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. What must I do to be aware of His presence in my daily life?
