Bible Reflections From Scripture Union Volume One

DAY 147 OF 181

Lifting up the Master
Read Genesis 24:28-67

The LORD has blessed my master abundantly, and he has become wealthy. He has given him sheep and cattle, silver and gold, menservants and maidservants, and camels and donkeys. Genesis 24:35

In this second part of the novella on Isaac and Rebekah’s arranged marriage, Abraham’s servant told his unforgettable story. To some readers it might seem repetitive, but it appears that the servant insisted on telling his story to Rebekah’s family for a purpose.

Firstly, notice that he gave God a prominent role, emphasising that God gives success. Secondly, he seemed to want to continuously testify to the fact that God answered his prayers in carrying out his special assignment of utmost importance to his master’s family. Such a personal relationship of trust in God and in His guidance remains a central teaching throughout the Bible, and still forms the basis of countless Christian testimonies today.

Last but not least, he wanted to uplift his master Abraham, taking the trouble to list Abraham’s possessions: sheep, cattle, silver and gold, menservants and maidservants, as well as camels and donkeys (v 35).

Although we noted earlier that Abraham did not acquire any landed property, he had all the other wealth indicators of his day. And the faithful servant tried to prove that by lavishly giving out a nose ring, bracelets, other gold and silver jewellery, clothing, and other costly gifts to Rebekah and her family members (v 53).

Like any good short story, the conclusion is brief. The servant identified Isaac as the ‘master’, signifying the transition from Abraham to Isaac. And Rebekah’s entry into Sarah’s tent indicated her new role as the matriarch of the family.

2 Corinthians 8:9: For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich.

List three ways in which we can magnify the Lord in our lives.

Pray for willingness to lift high our Master at every opportunity.
