Bible Reflections From Scripture Union Volume One

DAY 139 OF 181

Interceding for Others
Read Genesis 18:1-33

He answered, "For the sake of ten, I will not destroy it." Genesis 18:32

In today’s passage, we see Abraham in his outward-looking role as he intercedes for the people of Sodom and Gomorrah.

The chapter tells about God’s visit to Abraham and Sarah. There is a brief narrative about Sarah’s laughing, followed by a relatively long episode on Sodom and Gomorrah. The mention about Sarah’s laughing could be a passing reminder regarding the potentially devastating effects of taking God’s words lightly.

The righteous and the wicked are contrasted. In this context, the righteous referred to people who lived according to God’s rules. God raised the issue of doing what is right and just for Abraham’s children and his household after him (v 19). In other words, with his new role as the 'father of a multitude', Abraham must focus on transmitting the faith to the next generation.

The key words used to describe Sodom and Gomorrah are ‘great outcry’ and ‘grievous sin’. These words imply the existence of social injustice and abominations in the cities. Abraham was now concerned with the future of the ‘non-chosen’, especially the righteous. The cities were condemned, not for their lack of faith, but for the way in which they treated their fellowmen. Abraham pleaded to God for mercy but soon realised that there were not enough righteous people to turn the situation around.

As a chosen people of God, we are to direct our households to keep the way of the Lord. Intercede for the town or city in which you live.

Pray for family members who are not in the faith.
