Absolute Value

DAY 6 OF 7

MARY: VALUABLE EVEN WHEN SHE WAS NOT UNDERSTOOD

“Then Mary said, ‘Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.’” — Luke 1:38 (NKJV)

Mary’s life introduces us to a deep and quiet dimension of absolute value: the kind of value that does not need applause, explanations, or human approval in order to obey God. Mary teaches us that some callings are so sacred that they can only be sustained through total surrender.

Mary was a young woman, likely a teenager, living a simple life in Nazareth. She had no position, influence, or recognition. Yet God chose her for one of the most extraordinary assignments in history: to carry in her womb the Savior of the world. Here we find an essential truth about absolute value: God does not choose based on résumé—He chooses based on the disposition of the heart.

The angel’s announcement was not just a promise; it was a complete interruption of her plans. Mary was engaged. She had expectations, normal dreams. But heaven interrupted with a proposal that would change her life forever. Absolute value begins when God interrupts your plan with His.

Accepting that calling involved enormous risks: social rejection, family misunderstanding, possible legal condemnation, loss of reputation. Mary had no way to explain to people what God was doing within her. And here is a powerful lesson: not everything God deposits in you can be explained—but it can be obeyed.

Mary asked, “How will this be?” not out of unbelief, but out of humility. And when she understood that it came from God, she responded with a statement that defines absolute value: “Behold the maidservant of the Lord.”

She did not say, let it be if they understand me, let it be if they accept me, let it be if everything turns out well. She said, let it be according to Your word. Absolute value surrenders even when the path is uncertain.

Mary often had to carry this alone. Joseph doubted at first. People whispered. No one celebrated her obedience. But she treasured all these things in her heart. Absolute value learns to live before God, not before public opinion.

Later we see Mary in different stages of Jesus’ life: at His humble birth, during His quiet upbringing, and finally at the foot of the cross. Absolute value is not just saying “yes” once—it is remaining faithful when the cost increases.

Imagine her watching her Son rejected, beaten, crucified. The angel had spoken of an eternal King, yet she saw a cross. Still, she remained. Absolute value does not abandon the calling when the fulfillment does not look like the promise.

Mary understood something profound: her value was not in being understood, but in being faithful. Her identity was not in what people said about her, but in what God had spoken over her.

Many today abandon their calling because they are not understood. They grow frustrated when obedience does not bring immediate recognition. Mary teaches us that heaven honors what earth does not understand.

Absolute value accepts that:

God may ask you for something no one will celebrate
The calling may isolate you before it positions you
Obedience may hurt before it bears fruit
The promise may take time—but it will not fail

Mary never preached a sermon, never led an army, never wrote a book. Yet her silent obedience opened the door for the redemption of humanity. Absolute value is not always visible—but it is always transcendent.

Perhaps today God has entrusted you with something others do not understand: a decision, a process, a season of waiting, a sacrifice. Do not be discouraged. If it comes from God, He will take care of the outcome.

Remember: you do not need to be understood to be valuable; you need to obey to fulfill your purpose.

Answer the Reflection Question

Are you willing to obey God even when others do not understand what He has asked of you?

Pray

Lord, today I surrender my life to Your will. Help me obey You even if I am not understood, even if I receive no applause, even if the path is uncertain. I declare that my identity is in You and not in the opinion of others. Give me a humble, faithful, and surrendered heart like Mary’s. Let it be done to me according to Your word. In the name of Jesus, amen.
