The Posture of Prayer
Have you ever made a Christmas list? Maybe not for Santa—but for your parents or family.
If we’re honest, sometimes we treat prayer like that. A list of things we want God to do for us.
“God, help me pass this test.” “God, fix this situation.” “God, give me what I want.”
But prayer isn’t about getting God to do what we want.
It’s about aligning our hearts with what He wants.
Philippians 4:6–7 (ESV) says:
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God…”
Notice that word: thanksgiving.
We don’t start prayer with what we want—we start with what God has already done.
Instead of listing what you don’t have, start remembering what you do have.
You are loved. You are chosen. You are forgiven.
That changes your posture.
Prayer isn’t: “God, bless me.”
It becomes: “God, thank You—I’m already blessed.”
Yes, you can bring your needs to God. But not like Veruca Salt from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. She’s a spoiled maniac who pesters her dad about everything. She has so much to be thankful for, but she is already focused on wanting the next thing.
Hear this: God cares about your needs. But don’t come with entitlement—come with gratitude.
God can. I can’t. And that’s why I need Him. That’s the posture of prayer.
When you pray like that, something shifts. Your focus moves from yourself to God.
Reflection: What would change if you started every prayer with gratitude instead of requests?

About this Plan

This devotional invites you into a deeper, more authentic understanding of prayer—not as a routine, but as a personal connection with God made possible through Jesus. Through relatable moments and reflection, it underscores the Bible's emphasis that prayer is about gratitude, trust, and relationship—not just requests. It challenges you to move from treating prayer as a last resort to making it your first response. With a focus on authenticity, you're reminded that prayer isn’t about perfect words, but a real and honest heart.
