The Holy Spirit and His gifts

Key Verse:

"When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you" - John 16:13-14 ESV

The Holy Spirit is the third Person in the Trinity of the Godhead and as believers we bow to His guidance. He is not a genie that bows to our every whim or makes all our personal desires come true. He is your personal guide into truth. He doesn’t just speak occasionally—He desires ongoing conversation. He reveals Jesus, convicts, comforts, and empowers. He is present wherever you are. Because He is present and He is also called the Spirit of Truth, He helps you discern whether what you are receiving, is indeed from the Father, whether it reveals and glorifies Jesus.

The fruit of the Spirit shows us what a life looks like that is surrendered to Jesus. As we are changed into His likeness and partner with His guidance on a daily basis our very lives demonstrate our true design. We see love, joy, peace, long suffering flow from our innermost being. Other expressions of the Holy Spirit flow through the gifts of the Spirit—prophecy, wisdom, discernment, tongues, and more. These are expressions of God’s voice through His people. These gifts are not limited to those who are especially spiritually gifted, but for every believer as the Holy Spirit desires. These gifts are not just for church services; they’re for everyday life.

As we desire to be of more use to the Holy Spirit, He is faithful to cultivate those gifts in us. Learning to hear the Holy Spirit involves trust and practice. He may speak through a word of knowledge, a dream, or a sudden insight. The more you yield, the clearer His voice becomes.

Ask the Holy Spirit to show you which gifts He’s placed in you.

Practice listening and sharing a word of encouragement with someone.

Study 1 Corinthians 12 and reflect on how each gift reveals God’s voice.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit, I welcome You. I surrender myself to You. Grow love in me. Help me see as You see. Activate Your gifts in me. Help me hear You clearly and use what You give to build others up.
