Designed to hear – Spirit, soul and body

Key Verse:

"…May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ." - 1 Thessalonians 5:23

You were created with a built-in capacity to hear God. You have the capacity to hear and obey Him. Like the triune God, you’ve been created in His image. You are a spirit, you have soul, and you live in a body. Your spirit is where you connect most deeply with God, where deep cries out to deep. Your soul comprises of your will, your intellect and your emotion. Your body houses this internal world and acts on your behalf. Each part of you plays a role in receiving and responding to His voice. Your spirit connects with God’s Spirit, your soul interprets what it discerns, and your body acts accordingly.

Each one of these intelligence centres provide you with different data. By discovering their purpose, learning what they sound like and choosing to respond to them enables you to practice these different capabilities. By practice we learn to discern what is of God and what is not. Often, we expect hearing God to be dramatic, but it’s usually subtle—like a whisper to your spirit, a nudge in your emotions, or a physical sense of peace or urgency. Learning to discern these layers is part of spiritual maturity.

God speaks in ways that align with how He made you. Some hear through impressions, others through Scripture, dreams, or even nature. The key is recognizing that you’re wired to hear and respond.

Reflection/Activation Steps:

Reflect on a time you sensed God speaking through your emotions, thoughts, or physical senses.

Ask the Holy Spirit to highlight to which part of you He’s speaking to today.

Write down any impressions or thoughts that come during prayer.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for designing me to hear You. Help me become more aware of how You speak to my spirit, soul, and body. Teach me to respond with faith and obedience.
