DAY 7 OF 9

Tension — Why Is It an “Already-Not-Yet” Kingdom?

One of the most important — and most confusing — realities of the kingdom of God is that it is both already here and not yet fully realized. We live in the tension between what Jesus has begun and what He has promised to finish.

On one hand, Jesus said, “The kingdom of God has come near.” On the other hand, He taught us to pray, “Your kingdom come.” Both statements are true.

The kingdom has already arrived through Jesus — His life, His teaching, His miracles, His death, and His resurrection. Wherever Jesus reigns, the kingdom is present. When people surrender to Him, when lives change, when forgiveness flows, when faith grows, when hope rises — the kingdom is here.

But the kingdom is also not yet. We still see brokenness, sickness, injustice, and suffering. We still face temptation and spiritual battles. We still long for a world fully restored.

We see glimpses of His rule now, but not the fullness of it yet. That’s the tension every follower of Jesus lives in — the “already-not-yet.”

Romans 8:23 says we “groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies.” In other words, we have a taste of the kingdom today, but we’re waiting for the day when everything will be made new.

This tension explains so much of what we feel: Why God answers some prayers immediately and others through a long process. Why you can experience peace one moment and spiritual battle the next. Why you can see God transform parts of your life while still wrestling with other areas. Why you can walk in victory and still long for the final victory Jesus will bring.

Living in the “already-not-yet” keeps us anchored. It reminds us that this world is not our home. It keeps our hope alive. It keeps our hearts expectant.

God is working right now — already redeeming, restoring, healing, and leading. But He is also preparing a future where His kingdom will come in full — a day with no more pain, no more sin, no more death, and no more sorrow.

Revelation 21:4 gives us that promise: “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain.” That’s the “not yet” we’re longing for.

So how do we live in this tension? We live grateful for what God has already done. We live hopeful for what He will one day do. We live faithful in the in-between. We live expectant, knowing that every act of obedience brings more of the kingdom into the world around us.

You carry the kingdom with you — into your home, your workplace, your relationships, your decisions, and your conversations. And every time you choose humility, forgiveness, generosity, or perseverance, the kingdom breaks through a little more. This tension isn’t meant to frustrate you — it’s meant to form you. It keeps you dependent on the King. It keeps you longing for His presence. It keeps you looking toward His return.

The kingdom is already here — and one day, it will be here in full. Until then, you can live with confidence, knowing the story ends in victory.
