Ten Commandments of Marriage: A 10-Day Devotional

DAY 9 OF 10

Thou Shalt Forgive Quickly and Deeply

All marriages will experience wounds - words, neglect, or failures. The decision to forgive quickly and deeply prevents minor offenses from hardening into bitterness.

Forgiveness does not erase the past; it releases the debt and opens the door to restoration. Ephesians calls believers to kindness and forgiveness, modeling God’s mercy in our relationships.

Begin forgiveness with an honest confession.

When you’ve hurt your spouse, offer a clear apology without explanation-heavy excuses. When you’ve been hurt, practice receiving an apology and extending grace while naming steps to rebuild trust. Make restoration practical: identify specific behaviors to change, set accountability, and agree on measurable actions and timelines.

If your safety and well-being are threatened, reach out for help.

Consider talking to a therapist or your pastor. Deeper layers of hurt may require repeated grace, counseling, and time. Forgiveness is both a decision and a process. It may require asking God to help you release legitimate anger and to give you the patience to walk the restoration road, all the while ensuring your safety. Extending forgiveness keeps the marriage fertile for renewed affection and trust.

Application

Could there be some festering issues you have swept under the rug?

Identify one unresolved hurt and initiate a humble conversation toward reconciliation this week. Agree on one concrete next step.

Prayer

Lord, give us the strength to forgive and the humility to confess. Heal our wounds and restore our unity.
