Overflow

DAY 9 OF 10

The Overflow of Love

At the core of everything God does is love. His love is not measured, cautious, or conditional—it is abundant, relentless, and overflowing. Paul says in Romans 5:5 (NIV) that God’s love has been “poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.” Not trickled. Not rationed. Poured out until it overflows.

This love changes everything. Before we knew Christ, we were empty, searching for identity and worth in all the wrong places. But when His love entered our lives, it filled every corner—healing wounds, lifting shame, and breaking chains. The miracle of the gospel is that God didn’t just love us when we got it all together. He loved us at our worst. And Romans 5:8 reminds us of this fact: Christ died for us while we were still sinners, as a demonstration of God's love.

That’s why John can say with confidence, “We love because He first loved us.” Love begins with Him. It flows from Him. And when His love fills us, it cannot be contained. It spills over into how we treat our families, our neighbors, and even strangers.

Think of it like this: if you’ve ever filled a glass under a running faucet, there comes a moment when the glass can’t hold any more. The water spills over, touching everything around it. That’s how the love of God works in us. The more we receive, the more we release.

The overflow of love looks like forgiveness when revenge seems easier. It looks like kindness when irritation tries to take over. It looks like generosity when selfishness whispers, “Hold back.” Love is not a feeling we muster—it is the natural outflow of being filled with God.

Jesus told His disciples that everyone would know we are His disciples if we love one another (John 13:35 NIV), not by eloquent preaching, or impressive accomplishments, or even spiritual gifts—but by love. The overflow of love is the greatest testimony we can give to a watching world.

Maybe you’re reading this and thinking, “I don’t feel like I have much love to give right now.” That’s okay. You don’t have to create it. You simply need to position yourself under the waterfall of God’s love. Spend time in His presence. Read His Word. Remember the cross. As His love fills you again, it will naturally overflow to others.

Pause & Reflect:

  • Where have I been trying to love in my own strength instead of letting God’s love overflow through me?
  • Who in my life most needs to experience the overflow of Christ’s love today?
  • How can I make space daily to receive God’s love afresh?

Prayer: Father, thank You for pouring out Your love into my heart through the Holy Spirit. Let Your love overflow in my words, my actions, and my attitude today. May others see Your love in me and be drawn to You. In Jesus' name, amen.

About this Plan

Overflow

Overflow is more than mere abundance—it’s the divine moment when God pours so richly into our lives that it spills over into the lives of others. It’s not just a blessing to receive; it’s a powerful calling to share. This 10-day devotional will help you to recognize, receive, and release the Overflow God wants to pour out—not as a passive recipient of blessings, but as an active conduit of God's love, joy, peace, presence, and more.
