The Cross of Christ

DAY 7 OF 10

7 Statements from the Cross of Christ

In moments of final words, the fluff falls away, and what remains carries weight. On the cross, Jesus spoke seven statements - no throwaway lines, only purpose. Bruised, mocked, and forsaken, He left words that are not just last, but lasting. To live under the cross is to take hold of what He said there.

“Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they’re doing.”

While the world did its worst, Jesus gave His best - mercy. His first words under excruciating pain were intercession: forgiveness for soldiers, leaders, the crowd, and us. He didn’t only die for us; He died praying for us. He is the forgiving King.

“Today you will be with me in paradise.”

Two thieves hung beside Him - one mocked, one believed. With no resume of good deeds, the believer heard “today,” not “someday.” Salvation rests not on our past but on whom we trust now; eternity isn’t on lay-by - heaven invades earth today as we trust Him.

“Woman, here is your son… Here is your mother.”

In the middle of saving the world, Jesus tended to real, human responsibilities. He saw the anguish of those He loved and drew them together. It’s a call to care, to look after one another, to come closer rather than drift apart. He is the compassionate King.

“My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”

Standing in our place, He felt our separation so we could be brought near. Forsaken so we’d be accepted; abandoned so we’d be adopted; pierced so we’d be healed. This is substitution at the heart of the cross.

“I’m thirsty.”

The Water of Life submitted to thirst - His humanity on display—and fulfilled Scripture. Even here, prophecy was checked off, signalling that God’s plan still wins when we can’t see the end. In our need, we whisper hope: He’s working this for good.

“It is finished.”

Not “I am finished.” A victory-roar, not a sigh. Paid in full - tetelestai. Too many of us keep paying what He has already covered, as if salvation were “some assembly required.” The debt is cancelled, the law fulfilled, the enemy disarmed. Live under “finished.”

“Father, I entrust my spirit into your hands.”

His final words are trust - without panic or despair. He trusted the Father in life and in suffering, and we see what trust brings: Sunday is coming. For every Friday and every waiting Saturday, resurrection lies ahead.

Taking Hold Today
Which word do you need most right now - freely given forgiveness, the “today” of salvation, the call to draw near, hope when God feels far, confidence that the plan still wins, freedom under “finished,” or trust that ushers in resurrection? Easter is not only remembered; it is experienced - today.
