Even in the Shadows: Living With DepressionSample

In the Cave with David
There’s a moment in David’s life that speaks to the disorientation of depression. In 1 Samuel 22, he flees to the cave of Adullam -- alone, hunted, and unsure of what comes next. It’s not just a physical hiding place; it’s a spiritual crossroads. Psalm 142:3 (NLT), written during that time, is a cry from the depths: “I am overwhelmed, and you alone know the way I should turn.”
I’ve had seasons like that, where I didn’t know which way to turn. Depression can cloud your sense of direction. It’s not just sadness; it’s confusion, numbness, and the feeling that everything familiar has shifted. Even as a pastor, I’ve had days where I’ve questioned my calling, my capacity, and my connection to God.
But David’s cave wasn’t just a place of despair -- it was a place of honest prayer. He didn’t try to sound strong or spiritual. He simply told God the truth: “No one cares. I’m overwhelmed. I need You.” That kind of honesty has become a lifeline for me. When I can’t find clarity, I can still choose honesty. When I don’t feel strong, I can still be real.
And here’s the grace: God met David in the cave. Not with immediate answers, but with presence. Eventually, others joined him there. The cave became a place of rebuilding, not just retreat.
If you’re in a cave season -- emotionally disoriented, spiritually uncertain -- know this: God is not waiting for you to find your way out. He’s already there with you, and He welcomes your honesty.
Reflection Questions
- What does spiritual honesty look like for you right now?
- How has God met you in seasons of disorientation?
Prayer
God, I feel lost. The cave is dark, and I don’t know which way to turn. Thank You for not asking me to have it all together. You meet me here, with presence, not pressure. I don’t have to fake strength. I just need You. Help me be honest, and remind me I’m not alone. Amen.
