Heralding Hope

DAY 5 OF 7

A Humble Saviour

Lucknow is India’s uncrowned capital of graciousness and hospitality. It is aptly portrayed in a joke which goes something like this: “Why do passengers never leave the Lucknow Railway Station?” “Because they remain on the platform telling each other, “Pehle aap!” which translates to “you first.” Admittedly, the rest of the country has much to learn from Lucknowis about allowing others to go first.

As followers of Jesus, our benchmark for humility is Jesus Himself who said, “The greatest among you will be your servant” (MATTHEW 23:11). But He didn’t just say it with words, His actions and life demonstrated it for us. Jesus the Creator of the universe, was born in a manger and embraced human likeness, He took on the nature of a servant and became obedient unto death—even death on a cross (PHILIPPIANS 2:6-8). It was this obedient humility that further elevated His status granting Him the “highest place”, as the Saviour of the world (VV.9-11).

To have a humble heart is not easy. Exhibiting humility before those whom we love, like family or friends, is not so difficult, but humbly

putting the needs of strangers above our own is a tough ask (MARK 12:31). Jesus showed us the nature of true humility by putting others above Himself. May we too, this Christmas, follow His gracious example.

How can you put the needs of others above your own?

How can you show love to all people?

Lord, please instil in me the kind of humility that pleases You.

About this Plan

Heralding Hope

When the angelic chorus filled the skies that first Christmas night, they declared, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests” (Luke 2:13-14). They heralded hope and invited the shepherds to see the Christ child. This Christmas, we too are called to carry that same hope by inviting others to encounter the world’s greatest gift —Jesus. Through seven devotional reflections, this reading plan is a reminder that whether through humble acts of kindness or bold conversations of faith our lives can be a herald of hope for others.
