If You Knew

The Bible says that God’s people are destroyed through lack of knowledge. We can lose our lives by not knowing something. If you don’t know where the exit is in a hotel that’s on fire, you may perish. And at the moment, most people in this sad world haven’t any idea what’s going to happen to them after they die. They don’t know that God’s gift of eternal life comes through trusting in Jesus alone. They think they can instead earn eternal life by their good works.

If only they knew what we have in Christ, they would ask us about the way of salvation. And that’s what Jesus was saying to the woman at the well. If she knew who Jesus was—the very source of life itself in human form—she would ask him, and he would give her living water, everlasting life.

When we’re thirsty and begin to drink water, there comes a time during the drinking process when the thirst is completely satisfied. But with natural water, we will thirst again and need another drink. Not so with the water that Jesus gives. Living water gives satisfaction.

Before we came to Christ, we thirsted for pleasures that never lasted. They were transient, and like an alcoholic or a drug addict goes back for more, we had to continually go back to the world, the flesh, and the devil. But because God has given us a new heart that loves him, the thirst for sin has become distasteful. The living water satisfies our thirst for God.

Without a preacher, how will the rest of the world hear about this living water? May God help us to forget about ourselves and share the truth in love.

Prayer: Father, I need your love and wisdom today. Use me this day to further your kingdom.
