BibleProject | One Story That Leads to Jesus

DAY 273 OF 358

When someone asks Jesus to resolve a financial dispute they’re having with a sibling, Jesus says two things. First, no. I won’t resolve your problem because that’s not what I’m here to do. Second, let go of that greed. Greed might land you a pile of gold, but it won’t get you anywhere close to the good life.

Jesus tells a parable about a self-focused rich man—notice how many times the man says “I”—who hoards wealth and lives to party. He thinks money makes him secure. Then, he dies prematurely. All the money on Earth couldn’t prevent that from happening.

Therefore, Jesus says, instead of stressing over finances and worrying about food or clothing, try focusing on generosity and trust in God’s abundant provision. It’s wise to trust God alone for ongoing life.

Today’s video reminds us to meditate on God when we feel overwhelmed with stress about cash, clothing, or food. Like Psalm 118 encourages readers to find confidence in God rather than economic or political power, Jesus teaches followers to center their lives on God.

Jesus tries to teach the religious leaders a similar lesson, but they won’t hear it. He urges them to turn from their current way and see how Jesus is fulfilling the Scriptures right in front of them. When they condemn him for healing on the Sabbath, they demonstrate either their unwillingness or their inability to grasp God’s good news. Instead of receiving the gift of welcome partnership in Jesus’ mission, they reject the Lord’s favor. They trust their own way of thinking more than God’s.

All of this rejection causes Jesus to lament over Jerusalem. He loves this city and all its people, and he longs to lead them back home.

Reflection Questions

  • Where else in the Scriptures have you observed how the pursuit of riches gets in the way of generosity and love? Consider Nabal (1 Sam. 25), Achan (Josh. 7), and Gehazi (2 Kgs. 5).
  • Where in the Scriptures have you observed God providing food and clothing for his people? How do those passages inform your understanding of Jesus’ teaching?
