Being Still as You WaitSample

In the Midst of the Storm “Still Waiting”
Day 1—In the natural, very dim, bad news! Doctors gave us the grim prognosis that my grandson had a 10% chance of making it through the night, much less the next few days. WELL, SURPRISE!!!! Guess what: he not only made it through the night but made it through the first week—yes, on a ventilator breathing for him, IVs, and a tube for feedings, in an incubator where no one could touch him, but he was alive. Mom and Dad could only speak to him through small holes on the sides of the incubator...
Week 2—More bad news. Tests revealed that he had PDA (a heart defect where blood vessels between the lungs and heart remain open), multiple bleeds in his brain due to abrupt delivery and being so premature, not to mention that his lungs were underdeveloped. But God was not yet done...
We continued to pray and stand in faith, and so many people joined with us in agreement for total healing. The ups and downs continued—one step forward, three steps back. Now the medicine to close the PDA shut down his kidneys, and he became even more critical; a ventilator remained breathing for him, and bells and whistles continued to go off at every move he made. This situation required more prayer, more praise & worship; it required us to remain steadfast in faith through bad days and count the blessings of every moment he was still alive.
Weeks 6 & 7—Brain bleeds started to diminish slightly; Mom and Dad were able to hold him for the first time after seven weeks of just looking at him through a plastic incubator; he started to gain weight. God was definitely at work for all to see; we prayed some more, kept worshiping, and confessed God’s goodness because our grandson was still alive. The prognosis from the doctors didn’t seem to change: he was still very critical. Babies this young just don’t make it, and if they do, they are not well—is what they kept saying. Yes, we listened to the doctors, but we continued to believe the report of the Lord—that God has the final say and that if He had kept him alive, it was because He had a glorious plan in store for his life. We had to think contrary to what the professionals were saying; we had to keep the faith alive and keep depending on God. It was not easy in any way, but we knew that our other option was to agree with the doctors and give up on our grandson, and we refused to give up.
At about the ninth week, the grandparents were able to stand by the incubator and see him for the first time since we were told to say goodbye in that lonely hospital hallway. Glory be to our God!! We stood by that incubator and laid our hands on every corner of it and prayed heaven down on his behalf; we didn’t care who saw or heard us. We also slightly opened the holes of the incubator and, as we sang worship songs to him—every time we got near that incubator, we automatically began to sing—we knew he could hear us, and most importantly, we believed what we were singing. We were singing songs of healing, of miracles, of victory.
Even though trials, disappointments, and struggles come your way, don’t give up. Keep thanking God, no matter what you are in the midst of or waiting for. God alone knows your heart, and He alone has an answer. Wait on His timing, stand firm, and you too will see your miracle; it might be a new profession, a spouse, better finances, your health, family restoration, a home—nothing is too big or too small for God. As you remain in His presence in prayer, worship, and His Word, you will be able to endure. Don’t give up. Giving up is the easy thing to do—and will that bring you any closer to receiving your miracle? If God worked miracles in the past for others like us, He will do the same for you today because He doesn’t change; He remains the same, and the wonder‑working power is the same.
James 1:12:
“Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.”
Isaiah 40:31:
“But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”
Psalm 33:20:
“Our soul waits for the Lord; He is our help and our shield.”
Galatians 6:9:
“And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.”
Matthew 19:26:
“But Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.’”
Prayer
Thank you, Lord, that not only have you come through time after time again, but we know that we will see the victory. Thank you that there is no situation that’s too big or small for you. Thank you for your presence that fills us with hope and makes us strong when we are at our weakest. Thank you for your reckless love for us that makes the impossible totally possible.
About this Plan

This devotional is designed to help us remain strong in God‘s presence during a time of waiting. This might look different for us. Some might be waiting for healing, while others might be waiting for a spouse, some might be in a season where they need direction, a new job, or family restoration. There are many things we could be praying for and waiting for God to move in, and in this devotional, I will share with you how I navigated one of my waiting seasons.
