Causin' a Stir: Thirst Quenching Essentials for Satisfying Your Soul

DAY 24 OF 30

DAY 24 —Progressive Change

Years ago in Thailand, I sat in an elephant camp watching something I still can’t quite believe. Several elephants, brush in trunk, painted beautiful pictures on canvases before our eyes—trees, flowers, landscapes. Their movements were steady, purposeful, and more artistic that I could ever hope to paint. The finished product of the elephant painting closest to me, hangs in a bedroom in our home. It is such a striking addition, no one suspects it was painted by an improbable, yet remarkable artist.

But then there was that elephant. I could observe him in the distance painting his own canvas. Unlike the methodical and precise painter near me, his trunk swung wildly, slapping colors here and there like he had downed a double espresso. When the trainer revealed the finished product, it was a jumble of dots and streaks—a far cry from the masterpieces by the other large eared painters around it.

Some days, I feel just like that elephant. I want to be different--transformed into the woman God designed me to become, but my efforts at change look more like random splatters than a work of art.

Thirst-Quenching Essential #7: Transformation.

Psychologists describe transformation as deep, lasting change in the way we think, feel, and live—change that goes beyond surface behavior and reaches the core of who we are. And don’t we all long for that? Not just to tweak a few habits, but to become different people.

The trouble is, we often chase transformation in our own strength. We try 75-day challenges, self-help books, memberships, makeovers, or sheer willpower. And yes—sometimes those things help. But none of them can change the heart. None of them can make me forgive the person who wounded me, love the one who takes advantage of me, or live free from the shame of my past.

Only Jesus can do that.

That’s why Paul prayed with such urgency: that the God of peace Himself would sanctify us completely—body, soul, and spirit. Because we can’t transform ourselves. The One who calls us must also be the One who completes the work.

Transformation isn’t about trying harder—it’s about trusting God to do what only He can do.

So if you feel like your life looks more like splatters than a masterpiece, take heart. Transformation is God’s work in you—progressive, patient, and powered by His Spirit. The One who began it will be faithful to finish it.

Drink Deep

Where are you striving to change yourself by sheer willpower? Lay it before the Lord today, and ask Him to transform not just your habits, but your heart.
