The Bible's Business Plan

DAY 26 OF 31

For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.” Ephesians 2:10 NASB

BUSINESS BIBLE

The Gospel of Matthew records that Jesus’ disciples are businesspeople, including several fishermen and a tax collector. Peter and Andrew are business partners, and so are James and John, who employ workers to operate their fishing boats. Matthew’s training and occupation enable him to provide a business perspective of Jesus’ gospel and work.

Jesus’ message is for everyone— businesspeople, rich and poor alike. He addresses landowners and tenants, the rich, paying taxes, giving to the poor, forgiving debts, and the kingdom of God. He illustrates how millions of dollars in gold are invested and clears the temple of currency traders. Jesus did not come to abolish the Law or the Prophets. He came to fulfill them and do his Father’s business. He no longer calls his followers servants because servants do not know their master’s business. Instead, he calls them friends.

The Gospels reveal that Jesus came to redeem our lives and work. We are Christ’s workmanship, created to do good works. Good works, ergon in Greek, include careers, employment, and working for a living, like Jesus.

PRAY

Lord, help me to do good work.
