How to Pray for Anyone

DAY 5 OF 7

PRAYING FOR OTHERS TO EXPERIENCE GOD'S KINDNESS AND GOODNESS

In the last few years, it is the kindness and goodness of God that have humbled me the most. Today’s Scriptures reminded me once again that I carry testimony after testimony of the Lord’s kindness in my life—extended to me through His presence and through people who love Him. I’m praying you have seen this to be true in your own life as well, or that you will begin to as we spend time together today.

Have you ever experienced unfathomable kindness or goodness from someone? Maybe it was a stranger paying for your meal, a friend showing up at the exact moment you didn’t even know you needed them, or even just a glance of acknowledgment or a simple gesture of blessing that caught you completely off guard.

It’s humbling. And it changes us.

Why? Because this kind of goodness is something we know we didn’t earn—yet it was generously extended to us. And not begrudgingly, either. The giver of kindness in these moments often delights in giving.

This is the very kind of goodness and kindness God extends to us. And when the Holy Spirit is at work in our lives, that same goodness begins to flow out of us. We start to move through our days “dishing out” kindness and goodness like confetti—not because we are striving to, but because we can’t help but overflow with what we’ve already received from Him.

God’s kindness is a pure gift, one that is completely undeserved. He had every right to let our sins leave us as enemies, separated from His goodness forever. But instead, He calls us Beloved and chooses to dwell among us. That is kindness the world has never known apart from Jesus.

In the Old Testament, when Moses asked to see God’s glory, God revealed His goodness. His glory is revealed in His goodness. If we want to see His glory, we must look for His goodness. And if we are not seeing His goodness, we are missing His glory—for they are one and the same.

Once you see God’s goodness in your life, you can’t unsee His glory. Once you’ve been knocked to your knees by wave after wave of His unrelenting kindness, you are forever changed. Experiencing God’s goodness and kindness compels us to respond—to let it bear fruit in our lives as we walk gratefully with the Spirit.

Scripture overflows with reminders of God’s goodness and kindness—for us, and for those around us. As we pray for His goodness to transform both the lives of others and the soil of our own hearts, we can be confident that transformation will come. Ask God to overwhelm the person you are praying for with His goodness, leaving them in awe of His kindness. And don’t forget to preach these same truths to your own heart: the kindness of God has pursued you, carried you, and is transforming you even now.

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION:

  • Where is God’s goodness and kindness being revealed in your life, and how are you passing it on?
  • Who in your life is longing for God’s goodness? How can you pray for His kindness to transform them in the midst of their circumstances?
