Addiction isn’t always about chasing a high. For many, it’s about avoiding pain. It’s an attempt to escape the weight of trauma, grief, shame, or fear that overwhelms. Substances become a barrier between their heart and their hurt. But in the process, something precious can be lost — their emotions.

If you’re in the process of waking up from numbness, it’s okay to feel overwhelmed. Let God walk with you. He’s not afraid of your emotions. He created them. And He’s ready to show you what it means to live fully alive again. He will bring meaning back to you in them.

Prayer

God, I’ve spent so long trying not to feel anything. But I’m ready now. I’m ready to love again. I’m ready to let joy in. Teach me how to feel again. Help me face the emotions I’ve kept buried. Amen.
