30 Days With the Psalms

DAY 29 OF 30

God deeply cares about people

“Forsake me not,
O God of my salvation!
For my father and my mother have forsaken me,
but the LORD will take me in” (Psalm 27:9-10 ESV).

For many children, their parents are the people they feel most closely connected to. Naturally, parents will take care of their child. They will love and protect it whenever possible. If parents leave their child alone, be it willingly or compelled by circumstances beyond their control, that hurts a lot.

The author of Psalm 27 experienced this pain. However, he does not end up alone and desperate. He flees to God and begs him: “Forsake me not!” Then he expresses the confidence that the Lord will take care of him. There is good reason to be so confident. God says He cares more about His people than a mother cares about her newborn. “Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you. Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of My hands” (Isaiah 49:15-16 ESV).

Whenever you experience loneliness or grieve about the loss of dear family members, recall God’s promise. He will never forsake His children!
