Jesus has power over nature

“And a great windstorm arose …And He [Jesus] awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, ‘Peace! Be still!’ And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.” (Mark 4:37-39 ESV)

No one can withstand the forces of nature. Volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, floods... no human being can stand up to them! But God can, “who looks on the earth and it trembles, who touches the mountains and they smoke!” (Psalm 104:32 ESV) “He made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed.” (Psalm 107:29 ESV) So great is our God!

And then there is Jesus, with His disciples in a boat. A storm wind arises, threatening to destroy the boat. The disciples panic! But Jesus calms the sea with a few words. The sudden silence that follows is even more impressive than the raging storm. Full of awe, the disciples ask themselves, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?” (Mark 4:41 ESV) It is almost a rhetorical question, for who else but God Himself is capable of this?

A little later, the disciples are in their boat without Jesus. And again a storm arises. This time Jesus comes walking toward them on the water. As soon as He climbs into the boat, the wind ceases. And again the disciples are utterly astounded. They cannot comprehend what is happening.

The message of these miracles is clear: Jesus is God; He has all power!
