A Faith That Questions

I had just finished teaching a session on overcoming obstacles in leadership. I shared my own story. My failures, doubts, and the steady faithfulness of God through it all.

That’s when he came forward. Tears in his eyes. Arms open. He embraced me before saying a word. And then the story spilled out.

Years ago, he had answered God’s call and poured out his life for the Gospel. But the journey had been costly. He’d made decisions others didn’t understand. Faced criticism from fellow believers. Carried the weight of financial strain. Watched his parents’ health fade. And battled doubts that whispered he wasn’t enough.

He hadn’t abandoned his calling, but the fire in his soul felt faint. He was tired. Unsure if he could finish well.

But that day, as he listened to stories of others who had walked through fire, something broke the chains of doubt. Not formulas. No easy answers. But a reminder: God is still faithful. His identity was secure. The tears were tears of release.

And I realized again: doubt is not the enemy of faith. Despair is. Scripture calls us to “be merciful to those who doubt… save others by snatching them from the fire.” Mercy creates space for the weary to remember who they are in Christ.
