Who Am I, Really? Discovering the You God Had in MindSample

When I’m coaching clients, one of the most powerful exercises I take them through is called One Moment to Live.
It starts with this: Imagine you’ve just left the doctor’s office. After consulting with multiple specialists, you’re told you only have one year left to live. What three things would you absolutely make sure you do?
Then the timeline shrinks: one year becomes thirty days. Then one day. One hour. One minute.
As the time window closes, the answers often shift from big achievements to deep relationships. From productivity to presence. From building your life to preparing to let go.
That’s when the real priorities rise to the surface.
I experienced this firsthand as I cared for my elderly mother in her final years. She passed away at the age of 92. As her body grew weaker, so did her attachment to things she once enjoyed. Fancy gifts, new clothes, favorite foods—none of them mattered anymore.
Instead, she filled her time with prayer, hymns, and Scripture. She spoke often about eternity. She encouraged visitors to love and serve the Lord with their whole hearts.
Her impending death gave her a sacred clarity. But here’s the thing: you and I don’t have to wait for the end to find that clarity.
Jesus once told a parable about a man who thought he had time.
In Luke 12, a wealthy landowner harvests an abundant crop. Instead of asking what God might want him to do with the surplus, he decides to build bigger barns, store it all, and live it up. But God calls him a fool, saying, “This very night your life will be demanded from you.”
Then Jesus says:
“This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”
—Luke 12:21
Psalm 90 echoes the same truth:
“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”
—Psalm 90:12
And Jesus warns in Matthew 6:
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth… but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven… For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
None of us knows how much time we have left. Not one of us is guaranteed another year, another day, another hour.
So, why do we live like we have all the time in the world?
Like the rich fool, we often get busy accumulating more without pausing to ask what God wants from our lives. But when we live with eternity in mind, everything shifts. We start to invest in what truly matters. We align our time, treasure, and talents with God’s priorities. We live rich toward God.
In the words of Christian missionary C.T. Studd, “Only one life, ’twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.”
When you think about the legacy you’re leaving behind, what do you hope others will say mattered that most in your life? Are you living today in a way that reflects those eternal values?
Take a moment and ask yourself:
- What would I do differently if I knew I only had one year left?
- One month? One day?
- Am I living now in a way I’d be proud of then?
Don’t wait for a crisis to reprioritize your life. Let today be the moment you get clear on what matters most - and start living that way, now.
PRAYER
Lord, teach me to number my days and live with wisdom. Help me let go of what doesn’t matter and give my life fully to what does – loving You and serving Your purpose with all my heart. Amen.
