Daily Encouragement

DAY 319 OF 366

“Eternal encouragement” - the very thought is overwhelming! The source must be in God, and so it is. The singular person and the past tenses of the verbs point to the unity of Son and Father and take us back to Calvary. Eternal encouragement is the essence of the salvation which was achieved there. What eternal encouragement could there be if sin and death were unconquered? But at the cross they were vanquished, once for all. There God demonstrated his love and the grace of our Lord plumbed the depths, as he died for us (Rom. 5:8). All temporal encouragement which is not related to this eternal encouragement is evanescent at best. What kind of hope can it offer to anxious souls facing life’s perplexities, let alone to those approaching the valley of the shadow of death? It can only touch the surface; eternal encouragement penetrates the heart. Eternal encouragement says, “do not let your hearts be troubled,” and they are not empty words. The one who speaks them inhabits eternity. He is familiar with the Father’s house and the destiny of his children is in his hands (John 14:1-3). Eternal encouragement has a practical purpose. We are not strengthened to sit down, but for “every good deed and word.”
