“Called to be free” - what a lovely description of our high calling in Christ. It reflects his promise, “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36). It is vital to understand the nature of this freedom.
It is freedom of love. It is the freedom of the emancipated slave who declares, “I love my master; I will not go out free” (Exod. 21:5, AV). It is the freedom of the lover, captivated by the beloved. We are set free from ourselves to “serve one another in love” (Gal. 5:13). Love’s slaves are free.
It is the freedom of the Spirit - “So I say, live by the Spirit” (Gal. 5:16). The fullness of the Spirit is the true freedom, and its characteristic is “the fruit of the Spirit.”
Harold St. John’s daughter writes of an experience he underwent which was “too sacred to speak about and which lifted him into a radiance and freedom he had never known before. The rather solemn, self-conscious holiness gave way to a sort of uncalculating joy, as though he no longer had to watch his step in the heavenlies; he was at home there, self-forgetful, absorbed in Christ.” Our calling to be free is fulfilled, not in precisely the same experience, but by the same Spirit.
