Daily Encouragement

DAY 182 OF 366

How wonderful that there should be such a group at such a time! “Then” - that is, when things were at a very low ebb among the Lord’s people. This fact was revealed particularly in their speech: “You have said, ‘It is futile to serve God’” (verse 14). And yet, even then there were still a few God-fearing folk talking together in the presence of the Lord. Go far enough on even the Church’s darkest day and you will discover them. The Lord is never without such a remnant. What an encouragement it is to belong to such a group! - amidst spiritual deadness to meet with those who are meeting with God, to have fellowship with them and with him. And to do so with hope, because the few can pray for the many. What does it matter if they are few? God has promised his presence to the two or three who meet together in his name.(Matt. 18:20) Reverently we may add that it is an encouragement for God to hear people like this! The passage in Malachi contains an emphasis on his listening, on God himself stooping down so that he will not miss a word. We begin to see the value which the Lord puts on these saints “‘They will be mine,’ says the Lord Almighty, ‘in this day when I make up my treasured possessions’” (Mal. 3:17)
