Daily Encouragement

DAY 181 OF 366

In other words, all life will be set apart for God. “Holy to the Lord” will not be confined to the inscription on the high priest’s headgear (Ex. 28:36-37) but will extend to “the bells of the horses.” The division between secular and sacred will disappear. Cooking pots will be like sacred bowls. “That day” which Zechariah describes may seem to be far off even now: “The Lord will be king over the whole earth. On that day there will be one Lord, and his name the only name” (Zec. 14:9). Yet for those “called to be holy” (1 Cor. 1:2), “that day” is this day. “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light” (1 Pet. 2:9). How is it to work out in practice? Thinking of our cars and our microwave ovens as bearing the stamp, “Holy to the Lord” might well affect our attitude to travel and to work in the kitchen! If we extend this to the bench and the desk, the tennis racquet and the fishing rod and to “the marriage bed” (Heb. 13:4), then work, leisure and sexual relations will all be affected. Soon we will be doing everything “in the name of the Lord Jesus” (Col. 3:17).
