The Keys of the Kingdom

DAY 1 OF 7

Keys unlock and they lock. Keys permit access and they deny access.

If you try to gain access into your house by using the key from your car, the key will not work. This is not because the key is faulty, but because the car key is not intended for the house. You need a house key to gain access into a house, and you need the key specifically designed for your house to gain access into your home.

The keys of the kingdom are for the purpose of gaining access into God’s kingdom. They are not intended to open the door to our self-will, our self-advancement or our personal satisfaction. They exist in order to see God’s kingdom come and His will be done on earth as it is in heaven. This is the purpose for the keys of the kingdom.

The kingdom of God (otherwise known as the kingdom of heaven) is a central and vital theme throughout the Bible. In the New Testament, John the Baptist and Jesus both preached about the kingdom of heaven. Jesus taught people to pray for the kingdom of God to come and to seek first His kingdom. Throughout His sermons, Jesus shared many parables explaining what the kingdom of God looked like, and after His resurrection, He spent a further forty days talking about the kingdom of God.

When Jesus commissioned His disciples, He commissioned them to carry His delegated kingdom authority. He instructed them on what they should do and how they should do it. This is an important truth in understanding the keys of the kingdom: the keys are given by God, and it is for this reason that they carry supernatural power.

After Jesus had declared that He would build His church, He followed this statement up with a declaration that He will give His disciples the keys of the kingdom. These two declarations are inseparable, and when they are combined, Father’s will is done on earth as it is in heaven.
