Marriage and the law

Paul uses the picture of marriage to show our relationship to the law. Just as death ends the binding nature of a marriage covenant, Christ’s death frees us from the law’s hold, so we may now belong fully to Him. The law itself is holy and good, but our sinful nature twists it, exposing our need for a Saviour.

The law is like a mirror: it shows us God’s holiness and our shortcomings. It’s not the enemy—sin is. Left to our own devices, we often find ourselves frustrated, doing things we dislike and failing at what we truly desire to achieve. But through Christ, the old bond is broken. We are no longer married to sin under the law; we are united to Christ, who gives us new life.

This passage invites us to stop striving under guilt and instead embrace our freedom in Jesus. We don’t obey to earn righteousness; we obey out of love, empowered by His Spirit.
