DAY 12 OF 30

Great Commission in DR Congo

The Great Commission calls us to “go and make disciples of all nations…teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” In DR Congo, the Communauté Évangélique de l’Ubangi-Mongala (CEUM) lives out this calling through a mission that is both spiritual and practical—meeting the needs of the soul and the needs of daily life.

Reverend Théophile Duale Langba, president of the CEUM (or Covenant Church of Congo), describes the mission of the church in three parts. First is to bring people to Christ and proclaim the good news without shrinking back, even in seasons of hardship. Second is guiding believers through God’s Word and training leaders to shepherd faithfully. The third part is caring for the whole person through community development, health care, and education. This is the holistic gospel, which preaches salvation and at the same time seeks to improve daily life.

With more than 1,000 churches and pastors serving across 46 regions, the CEUM serves more than 2 million people. Worship is vibrant and full of life—sermons are interwoven with joyful singing and dancing. And the ministry extends far beyond Sunday gatherings. Bridges have been built to connect remote towns, opening new pathways for goods and relationships. Farmers have been empowered, revitalizing a once-declining coffee-producing trade. Clean water systems have brought safe drinking water to communities that once relied on unsafe sources. Hospitals and health centers offer care where none existed before.

These advances have come despite political and economic instability, the lingering effects of Covid-19, and widespread poverty. Severe malnutrition is a persistent crisis, especially among children. Yet in the midst of hardship, Rev. Duale encourages pastors, saying, “When I’m tired, I find strength by looking at the cross of Jesus Christ.” His words echo the Great Commission’s closing promise that Jesus is with us always, even to the end of the age.

The ministry in DR Congo demonstrates that the Great Commission is not a distant call. It is a present reality—whether in bustling cities or rural villages, whether in Congo or in our own neighborhoods. The call to go, teach, and care is the same, and the presence of Christ is our constant strength.

Reflection Question

Where might God be calling you to live out the Great Commission in both word and action

Prayer Points

  • That CEUM’s proclamation of the gospel will remain strong and Spirit-led
  • For provision and sustainability in health care, clean water, and development projects
  • For wisdom and encouragement for pastors and leaders facing economic hardship
  • That children suffering from malnutrition will receive care and long-term solutions
  • For continued unity and fruitful partnerships in ministry

Prayer

Lord Jesus, strengthen your church in DR Congo. Equip leaders to proclaim the gospel boldly, guide your people faithfully, and care for their communities with compassion. We ask that you provide for every need—physical and spiritual—and help us join in your mission wherever you send us. Amen.

About this Plan

Global Gospel

Global Gospel is a 30-day devotional exploring what it means to join God’s mission in the world. Through Scripture reflections and personal stories from diverse regions, contributors share moments of entering new communities as the stranger and finding welcome through Christ’s love. As you pray and reflect with the global church, may these voices inspire you to live out the gospel—nearby, across cultures, and to the ends of the earth.
