Authentic Faith in Action: From the Book of JamesSample

Day 9: No Favoritism
We live in a world where bias runs deep. Sometimes it shows up in obvious ways, but often it slips into our thoughts and behaviors without us even realizing it. It can be as subtle as who we greet with a smile and who we pass by without acknowledgment. Favoritism often flows from our human desire to align ourselves with people who appear powerful, influential, or comfortable, while overlooking those who seem to have little to offer us.
James confronts this head-on. He reminds us that in the Kingdom of God, appearances, titles, and wealth carry no weight. What matters is the heart. When we show favoritism, we step out of alignment with God’s character and become judges with evil motives—choosing status over compassion. Jesus Himself spent time with those society considered “less than”—fishermen, tax collectors, women, lepers, and the poor. His example shows us that true love does not discriminate.
When we recognize our bias and ask God to reshape how we see others, we reflect His heart in the world. Every person carries His image and deserves to be treated with dignity, honor, and respect.
Reflection: Do I treat people differently based on their appearance, status, or wealth?
Application: Be intentional today about how you interact with everyone, regardless of their perceived status. Make room in your life to honor the overlooked.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, forgive me for the times I have shown favoritism, whether knowingly or unknowingly. Purify my heart so I may see people as You see them—precious and worthy of love. Help me to walk in humility and extend grace without discrimination. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
