Day 17: Inconsistent Speech

James gets straight to the heart in these verses: our words reveal what’s flowing inside of us. He paints a vivid picture—how can one spring produce both fresh and salty water? In the same way, our mouths should not be a source of both blessing and cursing. Yet, how often do we find ourselves doing exactly that? We sing praises in church, then lose our patience with a family member, co-worker, or even a stranger who crosses us the wrong way.

Our speech is not just sound—it’s a reflection of our heart and of the God we serve. Inconsistency in our words sends a mixed message about our faith. Just as a fig tree can only bear figs, our mouths should only bear words that give life, build up, and reflect the love of Christ.

Being consistent in speech doesn’t mean being perfect—it means being intentional. It means slowing down before responding, inviting the Holy Spirit to guide our words, and letting gratitude and grace shape how we speak.

Reflection: Heart check: Am I inconsistent in my speech, praising God one moment and speaking negatively the next?

Application: Practice pausing before you speak today. When you’re tempted to react in frustration, ask: Will these words bring life or harm? Choose to let your words reflect Christ’s love in every setting.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, may my mouth be a spring of freshwater that glorifies You. Guard my tongue so I do not tear down those made in Your image. Fill my heart with grace so that my words consistently honor You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
