None Like Him: 5 Attributes of GodSample

God Is Holy
God is holy. He is set apart from everyone and everything. There is no one like Him.
I grew up hearing about God’s holiness. I sang songs and listened to prayers about how holy God is. But to be completely honest, I had no idea what God’s holiness meant. Was it about God’s rules? Was it about how much better one person was than another? As I got older, the word became stale and dormant to me (ironic, because that is the total opposite of what holiness is).
Holiness is defined as “set apart” or “sacred.” God is the Creator of all things; everything is created by Him. Because He alone is the Creator, He is completely different from everything else—utterly set apart. He is perfect in purity, righteousness, and goodness. His perfection makes Him holy. Holiness is the last word our minds should grow numb to.
If the reality of God’s holiness overwhelms you, it should. But it should also comfort you. He is holy, and He is our God.
God’s perfection and “set apartness” are nothing like anything we know. The God of the universe is better than all of us in every sense.
So how do we respond? We praise Him. Because God is holy, He is worthy of our worship. We live in awe of Him, overwhelmed and incredibly thankful because, unlike what you might think, God has made it so that His holiness doesn’t separate us from being with Him. On our own, our lack of holiness keeps us from being able to spend eternity with God. But when Jesus died in our place, He made a way for us to be set apart like He is—to become beloved children of a holy God. Our sins are covered by His perfection, and we can be set apart, too.
God is holy, and we still get to be with Him. God is perfect, yet He still wants to hear from and be with us. There is nothing stale or dormant about that!
Overwhelm. Awe. Comfort. We can experience all these things because the God who made us is perfect and set apart. We can trust Him because He is holy.

About this Plan

The beginning of understanding who we are is knowing who God is. For a teen girl, the most important thing about her identity isn’t her popularity or college major—it’s her creator. If you’re trying to understand yourself better, start by looking at God. During the next five days you’ll learn there’s none like him. And when you know without a doubt who God is, everything else fades into the distance.
