Doubting God in the DarkSample

Doubting God in the Dark

DAY 2 OF 5

When we find ourselves in a dark season, our emotions often become unreliable, and they craft stories that we should be on alert about. These stories are often lies that try to convince us that God has forgotten us, that He is distant, or that our faith has been in vain. In those moments, it’s crucial to remember that feelings are not facts. While John the Baptist sat in prison filled with doubt, Jesus was speaking publicly about him and honoring him as the greatest prophet born of a woman (Matthew 11:11). Think about that. While John wrestled with these emotions, Jesus saw his faithfulness and spoke about his value.

In other words, it's important to remember that the way you feel about God in your lowest moments is not the truth about how He feels about you. Emotions naturally shift with circumstances, but God’s truth remains. He sees beyond your fears to the faith He Himself planted within you.

Now, it’s easy to mistake God’s silence for absence, but the Bible tells us that there is nowhere we can go from His Spirit (Psalm 139:7–10). Just like a teacher who remains quiet during an exam, His silence is not abandonment but a test. In these moments, we must cling to the Word of God, which tells us that He will never forget us nor leave us. Just because you cannot sense His presence does not mean you’ve lost it. His love for you isn’t rooted in emotional highs; it’s anchored in His covenant promise.

If you feel unseen today, remember that God has never left you. Like John, you might be in a season where your surroundings don’t match your expectations, but hold onto truth in Scripture.

Today's Challenge: Think about a time you thought God had left you, but later realized He was with you. Write down what comes to mind. This will help remind you of His faithfulness.

Let's Pray: Father, anchor my heart in Your truth when my feelings tell me otherwise. Remind me that You are constant, even when You are silent.

About this Plan

Doubting God in the Dark

Life has a way of leading us through both mountaintops and valleys, seasons of clarity and seasons of confusion. In this reading plan, through John the Baptist’s story and the other verses in Scripture, you’ll see that doubt doesn’t disqualify you, God’s silence isn’t His absence, and your calling is worth more than your comfort. He is still writing your story, and His pen has never left the page.
