In the scene you just watched from The Chosen, the show’s creators plausibly imagine a moment where a pharisee named Nicodemus pays Mary Magdalene a visit to find out if her full deliverance is too good to be true. After all, seven demons have called her “home”—a number viewed by Jews as complete and insurmountable. But when Mary steps into view, there’s a radiance to her. She’s not stooping and stumbling along; she’s moving with grace and a proper confidence. And the testimony she offers to Nicodemus is short and sweet: “I was one way, and now I’m completely different. And the thing that happened in between was Him.”

It's quite a line from Mary—and one that could be offered up by the thousands upon thousands who also found healing in Jesus.

The Gospels are filled to full with stories marked by blind eyes, stopped ears, lifeless limbs, and hijacked heads—and all of these stories contain jaw-dropping plot twists toward sight and hearing, dancing and deliverance.

All of these stories contain the same in-between where the same Person stands.

Chances are, you find it a bit challenging to identify with Mary when you meet her in Scripture. You might struggle, too, to identify with the blind and the deaf, the paralyzed and—we’ve not even mentioned lepers!

But at the very least, surely you can identify with the make and mark of the kind of testimony she (and they) might have offered.

Yes, your story is different. But isn’t it also wonderfully, wondrously the same? You might not identify with the particulars; but you do with the plot twist. Because like Mary and the many others you’ve seen in Jesus that the God of Israel stands in the in-between of every story, giddy to bend it to the better for all who want it.
