The Chosen and Friends: God With Us

DAY 13 OF 30

Sent
From Come and See

Up to this point in Luke’s gospel, Jesus had been the one doing the ministering, and the disciples had simply had a front-row seat to the action. Now they are being commissioned to do what only he had done—the sorts of things surely only he could do.

You have to love the look on the faces of the disciples in that clip from The Chosen. They’re waiting for the punchline.

Actually, this probably wasn’t a laughing matter at all for them. They had to have been terrified at the notion of being sent out.

And how about you? Because if you call yourself a disciple, you’re sent just as much as the Twelve.

Maybe this will help you as much as it surely helped the disciples of yesterday: Jesus offers up quite a qualifier in the commissioning.

This first sending of the disciples is recorded in three of the four gospel accounts, and as is often the case, there are differences between the three—different details and emphases. But one thing that’s consistently and carefully noted in all three is that the disciples were not being sent in their own authority to proclaim and heal; they were being sent in Jesus’. Jesus calls on his disciples—including us—to proclaim the kingdom. That is, we don’t speak to any sort of rule and reign on our part, but rather his. When people cry, “Who are you to say anything at all to us?”, we need only say, “No, no, no—who is he? And what has he said?” And as to the healing? Of course they didn’t have the power to do such wonders! But Jesus gives them his power—the same power that had given life to limbs, opened blind eyes, unstopped ears, and sent demons fleeing. Any wonder worked by any one of us is worked by him through us.

Jesus reveals a God who sends—and sends even you. But Jesus reveals this, too, about God: God goes with us and works through us in ways we would have never imagined possible. Because with and through him, the impossible is made possible.
