Set Free: a Journey Through Galatians

DAY 2 OF 6

Justified by Faith

In Galatians 2, Paul recounts his confrontation with Peter, who withdrew from eating with Gentile believers out of fear of criticism from the circumcision group. Paul saw this as a denial of the gospel’s truth: that all are equal at the table of Christ. By publicly challenging Peter, Paul defended the integrity of the gospel—salvation is not about obeying cultural customs but about faith in Christ.

Paul drives home the essential truth that we are justified—made right with God—not by the works of the Law, but through faith in Jesus Christ (Galatians 2:16). No one can earn salvation by their effort or religious observance. This echoes Romans 3:28, which says we are justified by faith apart from the Law. Our right standing before God is based on Christ’s work, not our own.

In one of the most personal declarations in Scripture, Paul writes, “I have been crucified with Christ... and the life I now live I live by faith in the Son of God” (Galatians 2:20). This verse reminds us that Christian life is a daily surrender, not performance. The love of Christ, who gave Himself for us, becomes our reason for living, our source of righteousness, and our foundation for grace-filled living.

Prayer:
Jesus, thank You that I don’t have to earn Your approval. Help me to live each day trusting fully in Your finished work on the cross. Let my life reflect the freedom and humility of being justified by faith. Amen.
