The Protective Promises of Psalm 91Sample

The Protective Promises of Psalm 91

DAY 3 OF 9

Day 3: You Are My Refuge and Fortress

Looking once more at Psalm 91:2, it says, “I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.” Notice it says that God is your “refuge.” This is a translation of a Hebrew word that describes a place of shelter. It depicts protection, refuge, and shelter from dangers of all kinds and from storms and stormy situations.

Friend, that is what God is to you — your Refuge! He is your protection and shelter from dangers of all kinds. Have you ever really stopped to think about that? Have you ever opened your mouth and declared out loud, “You are my Refuge, Father!” When you speak those words in faith, His presence surrounds you, and you begin to sense His protection encompassing you.

Not only is the Lord your Refuge, but He is also your Fortress. In Hebrew, the word “fortress” in Psalm 91:2 describes a place of defense and protection. It is the same word for castle, fortress, or stronghold, and it can even be translated as a safe place of entanglement. The use of this word indicates that you are so secure in Him that you are tangled up in His protection and defense.

The verse goes on to say, “...In him will I trust” (Psalm 91:2). The phrase “will I trust” in Hebrew conveys the idea of absolute confidence, assurance, and trust. What a powerful declaration! Have you ever pressed pause on your life when everything seemed to be pushing against you and said, “Lord, I completely trust You, and I’m absolutely confident that You are protecting me. I truly believe that you are going to bring me through these situations.” Although this statement may go against the things you are feeling and may not make sense with what you can see, it is God’s cure for dealing with difficulties.

We are to take His promises to us, personalize them, and repeat them out loud back to Him. Friend, when you get the Word of God in your mouth and declare His promises back to Him — speaking them over yourself and those you love — you will activate His promises in your life. Indeed, He is your Never-Failing One and your strong Refuge — so strong that no enemy can break through or break in to touch you!

For Your Consideration:

  • Are there any barriers in your life preventing you from believing that God is your Refuge and Fortress? Don’t let these things rob you of your peace any longer! Give them to God.
  • What is an area of your life where you need to vocally declare your faith? Take a moment to say aloud, “Lord, I completely trust You, and I’m absolutely confident that You are protecting me and will bring me through this situation.” Say it as many times as you need, no matter how you may feel.
