The Protective Promises of Psalm 91Sample

The Protective Promises of Psalm 91

DAY 2 OF 9

Day 2: What Are You Saying?

Psalm 91:2 says, “I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.” As with verse 1, understanding this second verse is key to experiencing all the promises that follow.

What is interesting about this passage is that in the original Hebrew, the opening phrase is not “I will say of the Lord” but “I will say to the Lord.” This tells us clearly that Psalm 91 is a confession — or declaration — of faith. To claim and experience these promises of God, we have to put them in our mouth and speak them out loud to the Lord. It is not enough just to think about them or believe them; we must vocally declare these promises to God and speak them over our lives in order to activate them.

This inseparable connection between faith and speech is made clear in 2 Corinthians 4:13, which says, “We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak.” Notice that the verse doesn’t say, “I believed, and therefore I think.” It says, “I believed, and therefore have I spoken.” When we truly believe something, we need to be speaking it with our mouth.

For another example, look at Jesus’ words in Mark 11:23:

“For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.”

Again, Jesus didn’t say, “...Whosoever shall think about this mountain.” He said, “...Whosoever shall say unto this mountain.” He also says not to doubt in our hearts, but to believe that the things we say will really happen.

This verse tells us plainly that our heart and our mouth have to be saying the same things. The real power of faith is not released until words of faith are released from our mouths, but if we’re saying something with our mouths that we don’t believe in our hearts, it’s not going to manifest. We have to get our mouth and heart into agreement. When we do, though, our declaration will detonate God’s dynamic strength and cause what we’re believing to come to pass.

This is why you need to really know the Scriptures. You have to plant each verse in your heart, and once they’re in your heart, you have to get them in your mouth, and if there is no differing confession between your heart and your mouth, then you will be able to declare God’s promises and experience all that He has for you. The words of your mouth set the course for your life.

Friend, I would encourage you to go through Psalm 91 verse by verse — reading what the scripture says and then making it a personal confession. If you want these promises of Psalm 91 to be activated in your life, you have to do more than just think about them — you need to believe them in your heart and speak them out of your mouth.

For Your Consideration:

  • To experience the promises of God in Psalm 91, we have to plant them in our hearts and speak them with our mouths. Thinking about and meditating on Scripture is good and needed, but to activate God’s Word, we must declare His truth out loud — to God, over ourselves and loved ones, and against the enemy. Are you actively doing this in your life? If not, what’s keeping you from it?
  • Take a moment to practice by turning today’s readings into personal declarations.
  • As you read through Psalm 91, what verse (or verses) really stand out to you? Which one (or ones) do you personally treasure most? Why does this verse (or these verses) mean so much to you?
