Shining God's Light to Others

DAY 4 OF 5

Small Things Count!

Matthew and Ella spent a week at their grandparents’ farm. There were lots of chores to do!

Matthew helped Grandpa with all the big chores. Ella watched her brother drive the tractor and lift heavy bales of hay. She wanted to help too! But every time she tried, she just got in the way.

One afternoon,Grandma found Ella sitting under the shade tree, looking sad.

“What is wrong, Dear?” Grandma asked.

“I want to help, but I don’t know how,” Ella replied.

“Oh, you’ve been a big help,” Grandma insisted. “You helped me bake bread and gather the eggs.”

“But those are small things,” Ella said. “Matthew is helping Grandpa with big things like driving the tractor and lifting hay bales.”

Grandma pulled Ella close and said, “The small things are just as important as the big things. Imagine if Matthew and Grandpa didn’t have any eggs for breakfast or bread for lunch. They wouldn’t have any energy to do their chores!”

Ella thought about her grandma’s words for a moment. Then she remembered Galatians 6:9, which says, “Let us not become weary in doing good” (niv).

Standing to her feet, she took Grandma’s hand. They had important things to do! Just then, Grandpa came out of the barn and shouted, “Hey, Ella! It’s your turn to drive the tractor!”

Here’s a prayer to take with you: “Lord, please remind me that I can be helpful in big ways and small. After all, the small things count too. Amen.”
