Reimagine Transformation Through the Life of PaulSample

A Heart That Breaks
Have you ever walked through your community and felt a deep sadness over the spiritual emptiness around you? Maybe it's the way people chase after things that will never satisfy, or the hopelessness in their eyes despite outward success. If your heart has ever been stirred by the brokenness you see, you’re not alone—and that burden may be the very place where powerful ministry begins.
Paul wasn’t planning to start a mission in Athens. He was supposed to be waiting quietly for his companions. But as he walked through the city, what he saw stopped him in his tracks. Athens was filled with idols—shrines and statues on every corner. The intellectual capital of the ancient world had become, spiritually speaking, a graveyard.
And Paul’s response? He wasn’t just mildly concerned. Verse 16 says he was “greatly distressed.” (Acts 17:16, NIV) The Greek word implies a deep inner agitation—even anger. But not anger at the people. Paul’s heart was grieved by the spiritual darkness that held them captive. He saw through the beauty of the architecture and the brilliance of the philosophy to the poverty of their souls.
But Paul didn’t stew in frustration. He didn’t retreat to his room or wait for someone else to step in. He went straight to the synagogue and the marketplace—meeting people where they were, engaging both Jews and God-fearing Greeks, philosophers and skeptics.
His broken heart became the launchpad for his mission in Athens. He couldn’t stay silent. He couldn’t just pass through. His compassion compelled him to speak to people who were searching for truth in all the wrong places.
That same spiritual need still surrounds us today. People in our communities are looking for meaning in success, relationships, pleasure, or achievement. They’re chasing modern idols that are just as empty as the ancient ones.
The question is: Does that reality break our hearts the way it broke Paul’s? Do we look past the surface—past the sophistication, the polish, the performance—and see the deep spiritual hunger underneath? And if we do, will we let it move us?
When your heart breaks for what breaks God’s, you won’t be able to stay passive. You’ll find yourself drawn to listen, to engage, to offer hope. The same compassion that brings you to tears can move you to action—and move others toward the hope they’ve been searching for all along.
Reflection Questions:
- What aspects of your community’s spiritual condition most burden your heart?
- How does Paul’s example challenge the way you typically respond to people living without hope?
Prayer:
Lord, give me Paul’s heart—eyes to see spiritual need and compassion that moves me to action. Help me engage my world with Your love. Break my heart for what breaks Yours. Amen.

About this Plan

In Reimagine Transformation, part two of our 6-part Reimagine series, we explore how the Apostle Paul modeled bold, compassionate evangelism in a culture of confusion. When Paul entered Athens, his heart broke—not with judgment, but compassion. He met people where they were, spoke their language, and built bridges to truth without compromising the gospel. This plan will help you share Christ in a diverse world. Even when results are mixed, your faithfulness matters. Get ready to reimagine how God can use your voice and story to reach the hearts of those still searching.
