Everyone You Meet Needs Christ's Love
One morning, in my time with Jesus, He gave me a new assignment: to engage with people without homes.
I was surprised to feel a stirring in my heart toward something so unfamiliar. I tend to be compassionate. I often prayed for the unhoused I saw on the side of the road and talked to a few outside a store. But to engage with them?
I said “yes.” As I entered my favorite grocery store, I saw an elderly man in a wheelchair. I approached and greeted him. I asked if I could get him anything from the store. “Oh yes, please. Just two plastic bags to hold my things.”
But as I shopped, I thought of things he might like—soft fruit, fresh cooked chicken tenders, orange juice, and a little candy. As I filled my basket, I exited, hoping he was still there. He was! I handed him two plastic bags filled with nourishing and delicious food. Tears trickled down his face: “No one has ever done this for me before.”
Then, before I left, I asked what I could pray for him. Tears again. I put my hand on his shoulder and asked God to bless him.
That was the start of my “homeless encounter” ministry. God opened my eyes and heart—to notice them, hear their stories, offer at least $20, and often pray with them.
Friends expressed amazement and often feared for me. They told me I was foolish, but I have never had a negative experience.
I’ve learned the most common reason for being unhoused is a loss of a job. And most are lonely—and grateful for a conversation.
God has grown my heart of compassion and a desire to meet needs. He has given me so many opportunities to tell people of His great love for them.
And I have learned to listen for God’s voice, for the next steps He has for me. There are new callings, and I am privileged to introduce others to my very loving Father.
What are some ways you can show compassion—occasionally or consistently?
Who knows what He might be preparing for you!
Application Questions:
- When was the last time you noticed someone in need and took action to help? What did you do?
- What practical steps could you take to show compassion—either as a one-time act or as an ongoing habit?
Prayer:
"Lord, thank You for caring for the people the world often overlooks. Open my eyes to see those around me who need kindness, love, and hope. Give me courage to step out of my comfort zone and follow Your voice, even when it surprises me. Fill my heart with compassion that moves me to action. Use my words, my time, and my resources to show others how much You love them. And help me to listen closely for the next step You are calling me to take. Amen."
