Paul considers how his potential death might affect the faith of the Philippians. That's why he encourages them once more: If I really must die, then rejoice with me!
"Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling"—at first, this doesn't sound like Paul at all. But the crucial clarification immediately follows: "for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work." Paul is saying: Take the steps that Jesus shows you—not in your own strength, but by trusting in the One who is at work in you.

How is it evident in my life that I "shine as a light" in the world (v. 15)? And how does this fit with Jesus's statement that He is the light of the world (John 8:12)?
