Names of GodSample

Day 9: The I AM
Devotional:
The name “I AM” is one of the most profound and mysterious names God reveals to us in Scripture. When God spoke to Moses from the burning bush, He identified Himself as “I AM WHO I AM”, a name that defies simple explanation but reveals the essence of God’s eternal, self-existent, and unchanging nature.
Unlike all created beings who depend on others for their existence, God is self-existent. He is not defined by time, space, or any external factor. He simply IS. This name signifies absolute independence, eternal presence, and supreme authority.
For the Israelites trapped in slavery, hearing that the God who sent Moses was “I AM” meant hope. It meant that the God of the universe was intimately involved with their struggle and powerful enough to deliver them.
I AM Shows God’s Eternal Self-Existence
God is not a being who came into existence; He is the eternal “I AM.” His existence does not depend on anything or anyone. This truth gives us security because God is unchanging and always present.
Whatever storms rage around us, whatever uncertainties we face, I AM stands firm. His presence is constant; His power is limitless.
I AM Reveals God’s Faithfulness to His People
God’s declaration “I AM WHO I AM” can also be understood as “I will be what I will be”, meaning God’s faithfulness unfolds over time according to His perfect will.
He is the God who promises and keeps His promises. When He calls you, He is present with you, faithful through every season.
Jesus Christ: The I AM
In the New Testament, Jesus repeatedly uses the name “I AM” to reveal His divine identity (John 8:58, John 18:5-6). Jesus claimed to be the eternal God, fully revealing who God is in human form.
Jesus said, “Before Abraham was, I AM”, a direct claim to deity. When we trust Jesus, we trust the eternal, self-existent God who saves, sustains, and loves us.
Living in Light of the I AM
Recognizing God as I AM calls us to live in the presence of the eternal One. It encourages us to rest in His unchanging nature, to trust His promises, and to draw strength from His ever-present help.
No matter what you face today, the I AM is unchanging, faithful, and powerful with you.
Prayer:
I AM, you are the eternal, self-existent God. Thank you for revealing yourself as the One who is unchanging and faithful. Help me to trust your presence and power in every moment. When I feel uncertain or afraid, remind me that you are with me always. It is in the name of Jesus we pray, amen.
Reflection Questions:
- How does knowing God as the eternal I AM affect your understanding of His presence in your life?
- In what ways do you see Jesus revealing Himself as the I AM in the New Testament?
- How can you rest more deeply in the unchanging nature of God today?
