07 – Difficult Forgiveness

“And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.” (Matthew 6:12, NIV)

There are two more questions we need to face—and we must take a stance on them: Why do we struggle so much to forgive those who have wronged us? And why is it so hard to let go of old resentments that eat away at our soul?

The truth is, we’re not always fully aware that these issues exist in the hidden corners of our hearts. Many of us have grown so accustomed to them that we hardly notice how deeply they’ve taken root within us. But we need to understand this: beneath the difficulty to forgive lies human pride—always tied to our ego, that stubborn part of us that refuses to bow or break.

We resist forgiveness because we cling to our “rights,” we demand our privileges, and we insist on holding our ground. But let me invite you to imagine something: picture the throne of your life—the very place where selfishness has long been seated, ruling over your thoughts, decisions, and actions.

We must recognize that this pride-driven posture comes at a high cost. Slowly, it separates us from the very people we love most—often without us even realizing it. Pride makes us rigid, arrogant, self-pitying, quick to justify ourselves, and quick to blame others.

So now what? How can we move past this destructive posture?
