It’s story time!

I once heard a story. I don’t know whether it’s true or fiction, but it is worth sharing anyway:

There once was a King who offered a prize to the artist who would paint the best picture of peace. Many artists tried. The King looked at all the pictures, but there were only two he really liked. He had to choose between them.

The first painting depicted a serene lake, perfectly mirroring the towering mountains around it. Above, fluffy white clouds drifted across a bright blue sky. Everyone who saw it thought, this is the perfect picture of peace.

The second painting was strikingly different. It also had mountains, but they were rugged and bare. The sky raged with a storm, pouring rain and flashing lightning. A violent waterfall crashed down the mountainside. At first glance, it seemed anything but peaceful.

But when the king looked closer, he noticed something—behind the waterfall, nestled in a tiny crevice of rock, sat a mother bird on her nest, calm and undisturbed.

The king chose this painting as the winner.

He explained, “Peace is not a place without noise, trouble or hard work. Peace is having calm from within while the world is raging around you.”

Just like that mother bird, we, too, have a Rock that shelters us:

The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. – Psalms 18:2 NIV

For in the day of trouble He will keep me safe in His dwelling; He will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent and set me high upon a rock. – Psalms 27:5 NIV

Friend, the peace that God gives us does not depend on our circumstances or our state of mind. It even transcends our understanding

And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. – Philippians 4:7 NIV
