Be Still- Rest on God's Sovereignty

Solitude is a beautiful place to encounter the Lord in stillness. It is a way to posture yourself in a position of surrender and willingness to receive from God. The Lord's voice is often spoken in a still, small manner. Hearing a still, small voice requires discipline to train your mind to slow down and your ears to listen.

Moses taught this principle to the Israelites when all seemed dire, as the Egyptians chased them after leaving their place of bondage. He told them they need only to be still, for the Lord would fight for them. God fought Israel’s battles for them on many occasions as they journeyed to the Promised Land.

When you slow down to be still before God, you are giving Him the room. You are operating in full dependence as you wait for Him. As you do this, He is faithful to move on your behalf in the way He desires to!

Prayer

Lord, thank you for Your still, small voice. Come and speak to me in the stillness. Teach me to quiet my mind and heart, so I can hear Your voice clearly. Today, I bring all my cares to Your feet. I receive Your peace and rest. Amen.

Application

• Enter into a quiet place where you can just be still before the Lord. Posture yourself in a position to receive from Him. This may look like kneeling, lying prostrate on the floor, or sitting/standing with your hands open to receive.
• Concentrate on listening for God’s voice. Don’t worry if this feels difficult or awkward at first. Just listen for the first thought you hear. Then write it down or say it out loud. Stay in that place of stillness. Look to feel a greater sense of rest and peace before you leave.
