WE SHALL NOT DIE - Reading With the People of God #17

DAY 25 OF 61

Be Broken or Be Broken

As you read today’s passages, pay attention to the presence (and consequences) of pride. Scripture consistently teaches this truth: you can choose to be broken before God, or you will be broken by Him.

In Isaiah 8, we see Israel’s arrogance and their refusal to trust the Lord. Their pride leads to judgment. In contrast, Isaiah himself walks in the fear of the Lord; an attitude of humility and reverence that is the exact opposite of pride. Isaiah becomes a model for us: broken before God, yet bold in faith.

Then we turn to Luke 22, where even Jesus’ closest disciples fall into pride. As Jesus prepares for His suffering, they argue over who is the greatest. It’s a moment of deep sorrow—Jesus is about to lay down His life, and His friends are focused on self-glory.

Their actions betray their hearts. In the end, they don’t live up to the confidence they expressed. They falter. But Jesus meets their failure with truth and grace. He doesn't reject them; He reshapes them. These same men, who once argued about greatness, later choose humility. Most will follow Him to the end, even unto death.

So here’s the choice laid before us: Be broken—or be broken.

About this Plan

WE SHALL NOT DIE - Reading With the People of God #17

In this 17th installment of Reading with the People of God, we continue following a lectionary rhythm—Old Testament, New Testament, and Psalms. This plan explores the prophetic voices of Micah, Habakkuk, and Isaiah, who confronted kings and warned of coming judgment while pointing to the hope of the Messiah. Alongside these, we'll read from the Gospel of Luke and the book of Acts, tracing the life of Christ and the birth of the Church. As we read these powerful passages in parallel, may the Spirit shape us and grow us in Christ together.
