Don't Take the Bait

DAY 4 OF 5

Forgiven a Massive Debt

The foundational truth of forgiveness is found in the parable of the unforgiving servant. Jesus illustrates the vast contrast between God’s mercy and man’s reluctance to forgive. A servant, who owes an unimaginable debt (well over ten million dollars in today’s currency), pleads to his king for mercy and is forgiven—his entire debt wiped clean. However, the servant immediately turns around and refuses to forgive a fellow servant who owes him approximately three months’ wages. When the king finds out, he is furious, and the servant is handed over to be punished.

This story starkly reminds us that God’s forgiveness is not just a gift to receive but a model to follow. Our heavenly Father has freely forgiven us of such an enormous, unpayable debt—the debt of sin. It is foolish of us to hold a grudge or unforgiveness against someone which in comparison amounts to something insignificant.

My dear friend, if you are harboring unforgiveness toward someone, I encourage you to let it go and forgive them completely, just as our heavenly Father has forgiven us.
